Language Provision

At ICS London, we aspire to nurture a genuine passion for languages among our students and foster an appreciation for diverse cultures, empowering them to thrive in our interconnected world. Our approach to language education is rigorous, offering cognitive benefits and deeper insights into English while nurturing fluency in the language of their choice. We take pride in our track record of inspiring students to continue their language learning journey, with 100% of our pupils studying at least one additional language at both IGCSE and DP levels. 

In the Early Years Programme (EYFS), our Nursery & Reception classes, students as young as age 3 have the opportunity to begin learning a language.

Depending upon their current level of English, the children have the chance to learn French, Spanish, or Mandarin Chinese through our play-based approach.  This language provision continues through our Primary Years Programme (PYP) as the students continue to receive two hours of language instruction twice a week. 

In the Middle Years Programme (MYP) spanning Years 7-9, students embark on a bespoke language course also in French, Spanish, or Mandarin Chinese. Our language instructors are native speakers, ensuring authenticity and excellence in teaching. With our small class sizes, we tailor the curriculum to cater to each student's individual proficiency level. At the IGCSE level, all students are required to continue studying at least one of these three languages. Moreover, students proficient in an additional language or mother tongue may opt for an early IGCSE examination upon enrollment. 

Continuous assessment occurs through regular vocabulary tests, homework assignments, and classroom engagements. Formal, external assessments take place at the conclusion of Year 11 (IGCSE) and Year 13 (DP), where students sit examinations administered by recognized exam boards.

Pupils learning each modern language may have the opportunity to meet and converse with native speaking teachers as well as other pupils for whom French, Spanish, or Mandarin Chinese is a first language as we are a truly international school with students from all over the globe.  Our school also offers a variety of language clubs and societies across both the Primary and Secondary schools which have previously included such extra curriculars as Latin club, Arabic club, and Chinese Culture club, etc.
