IB Primary Years Programme (PYP): year 1-6
This stage focuses on developing young students as caring, active participants in a lifelong learning journey.
The PYP (Primary Years Programme) offers an inquiry-based, transdisciplinary curriculum framework that builds conceptual understanding. It is a student-centered approach to education for children aged 3-11. It reflects the best of educational research, thought, leadership and experience derived from IB World Schools.
A PYP Student Perspective
In the final year of the PYP, students demonstrate independence and responsibility for their own learning in The Exhibition, an important culmination of the programme.
Designed as a holistic programme for all age groups, students continue their learning into the MYP and (i)GCSE programmes which culminates in the globally recognised IB Diploma.
ICS London Units of Inquiry
The PYP encourages students to learn to appreciate knowledge, conceptual understandings, skills and personal attributes as a connected whole. The programme of inquiry is organised and framed by six transdisciplinary themes:
Little Wandle

At ICS London Primary School, we teach early reading and spelling using Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised, a high-quality systematic synthetic phonics programme used by thousands of schools in the UK and beyond. Little Wandle is built on the latest evidence about how children learn to read and is fully structured to support pupils step-by-step as they build confident decoding, blending and spelling skills.
This approach is especially effective in our diverse community with children from many different nationalities, cultures and English-language backgrounds. Little Wandle’s clear progression ensures that all pupils - including those who are new to English - access consistent teaching and practise the sounds they know through carefully matched decodable texts and daily lessons.
Teachers use engaging routines, joyful characters and targeted support to make phonics both accessible and motivating, while ongoing assessment helps us track progress and provide timely ‘keep-up’ support for any child who needs it.
Through Little Wandle, pupils not only master the skills of early reading and writing, but also develop confidence and enjoyment in reading - laying a strong foundation for lifelong learning.
