Three of our secondary students, Emma, Shiomi, and Daria, recently had the incredible opportunity to attend the annual Globeducate Model United Nations (MUN) conference in Valencia, Spain. This prestigious academic event brings together students aged 16 and older to simulate the workings of the United Nations, engaging in debates on pressing global issues while developing crucial skills in diplomacy, public speaking, negotiation, and policy analysis.
Upon arrival in Valencia, the students took the time to explore the city and visited the renowned Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias (City of Arts and Sciences), a stunning architectural and cultural complex. Following this, they made their way to EDEM Business University, where the MUN conference took place, and met their respective committees.
During the conference, they participated in thought-provoking debates, collaborated with peers from around the world, and successfully agreed on a resolution. This hands-on experience provided them with a deeper understanding of international relations and the decision-making processes within the United Nations.
Reflections from Our Students
For Shiomi, this was a particularly valuable experience:
“It was my first time attending an MUN conference. I often get scared of talking in front of people who are not familiar with me. However, from this experience, I gained important skills such as negotiating and speaking in front of an audience. It helped me to understand current global issues in greater depth. Additionally, I developed my research and analytical skills. However, it was challenging to speak straight away as this was my first participation in MUN. Observing how the other delegates spoke and negotiated around me helped me gain confidence to speak up.”
Emma also reflected on the unique blend of formality and enjoyment at the event:
“This year’s Globeducate MUN event was not only formal and serious, but it was also fun and delightful. We participated in conferences and spoke about important political topics affecting the world. We made resolutions and practised making amendments to those resolutions by putting our thoughts forward and discussing them with our committees. We not only got to be part of these conferences, but we also explored the city of Valencia. As a group, we visited the aquarium, climbed the cathedral, and admired the architecture of the city. Overall, this was a fantastic experience that I was proud to be part of.”
Culinary and Social Highlights
Beyond the conference, the students immersed themselves in Spanish culture by trying the traditional horchata with fartón, a popular local drink and pastry combination. Their adventure concluded with a Gala Dinner, where they had the opportunity to celebrate their achievements and build friendships with fellow delegates from across the globe.
A Valuable Learning Experience
The Globeducate MUN conference provided Emma, Shiomi, and Daria with an unforgettable educational and cultural experience. They not only enhanced their public speaking and analytical skills but also broadened their perspectives on global affairs and diplomacy.
We are incredibly proud of our students for their dedication and enthusiasm, and we look forward to seeing how they continue to apply their newfound knowledge and confidence in future academic and leadership endeavours.
