This week Diploma Program students (with a few Year 11s) visited the The Guardian publishing house in King’s Cross. Experts in the field guided ICS London students through an investigation into how young people consume news today and what makes a news app relevant and engaging.

Students then designed and presented wireframes for their own news app, following a user experience (UX) process that includes competitor analysis, creative problem-solving, and pitching their ideas to peers. In this interdisciplinary experience, students recognized real-world implementation of the design cycle to disseminate the product of the news. The workshop leaders even suggest one of our Year 13s should “Come work for us!” after the student pitched a particularly creative idea. A fabulous feature of the experience was exposure to all the different fields related to the news industry, such as Product Designer, Engineer, and Product Manager.

After a quick visit to the The London BookBarge--where students spotted works by recently studied authors such as Harper Lee and F. Scott Fitzgerald--they headed to the City of London and stepped into the past. A guided walking tour blended language study with history: students learned about Fleet Street’s role in British publishing and journalism. Though all the major newspaper publishers have moved out of the area, St Bride’s Church--known as the journalists’ church--still serves as a meeting and memorial to the risk journalists take around the world in pursuit of the truth.

It was a rewarding day of extending learning beyond the classroom and utilizing the richness of our local London areas.
